Area Status: Closed

South Fork is one of the most popular camping sites on the Smokey Bear Ranger District. It has 53 sites with a stay limit of 14 days. Trail access to the White Mountain Wilderness leaves from the campground via the South Fork Trail (T19).  The early portion of this trail is moderately easy with the higher portions being difficult.

General Information

Directions:

Follow NM 48, 9 miles north from Ruidoso; turn west (left) and follow NM 37 for 1-1/2 miles, turn southwest (left) on Forest Road 107 (County Road C-009), continue for 5 miles. Pass Bonito Lake, turn left continuing straight for about 1 mile.


Parking:

There are two distinct parking areas at Southfork Campground.  One for the tent only camping area and one specifically for the Southfork Trailhead and access to this trail.

Day Hiking

 

The South Fork Trailhead (T19) is located at the campground site and offers a quick day hike to more advanced backpack hiking throughout the White Mountain Wilderness Area.  Only pedestrian and pack/saddle animals allowed on this trail.
