South Sister Climber Trail

Dogs need to be on-leash in Three Sisters Wilderness on: Green Lakes, Moraine Lakes, South Sister, Soda Creek, Todd Lake and Crater Ditch Trails, from July 15 to September 15. 


This trail climbs steeply over rugged terrain and loose cinders to the summit of South Sister. Because of the popularity of this trail, it is highly recommended to avoid weekends.

Know Before You Go: Rapidly changing and harsh high mountain weather requires thorough preparation for this climb, even when the skies are blue at the trailhead. Early season snow climbs require an ice axe and knowledge of its use for safety.

This trail enters the Three Sisters Wilderness shortly after leaving the trailhead. Wilderness Permits are required for both day use and overnight stays from this trailhead. See "Permit Info" below for more details.

Recreation Fee Site: Parking at this site requires a recreation pass. Passes are available at this site, but can also be purchased from Forest Service offices or vendors. Please check here for more information about recreation passes and where they can be purchased.

  • Build campfires at least 100 feet away from water
  • Pack in / Pack out!
  • “Take only pictures, leave only footprints” — please refrain from cutting, damaging, or gathering vegetation or other forest items (e.g. rocks, artifacts, etc.)
  • Please bury human waste 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water

This trail begins at the Devil's Lake Trailhead, 29 miles west of Bend, just off of Cascade Lakes Highway.
