Glacier Lake Trail (# 3)
Glacier Lake Trail (# 3) is 2.2 miles long. It is a short but steep trail with spectacular views. Glacier Lake sits at 9,700 feet, but the trail climbs to more than 10,000 feet before you reach the lake. Elevation change: 1700 feet. The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking.
The lake is in both Wyoming and Montana. If you plan to fish, please be aware that both state’s fishing license could be needed, depending on where you are fishing. Plan accordingly.
*Please be aware that travelling in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness comes with additional regulations. Please know what is expected of visitors before entering the wilderness.
Directions from the Beartooth Ranger District office:
Drive south on US Hwy 212 towards Cooke City for 10.9 miles. Turn right onto the Main Fork Rock Creek Rd (FR #2421). Drive 0.9 miles past Parkside, Greenough and Limberpine Campgrounds. Turn left just have to Limberpine Campground to continue on the Main Fork Rock Creek Rd. Drive 7.7 miles to the trailhead. There is ample parking and a vault toilet at trailhead.
*Please be advised that the Main Fork Rock Creek Rd is rocky with potholes. High clearance vehicles are advised.
*In previous years visitors to the Glacier Lake TH have returned from hiking to find that marmots had eaten important parts of their cars (wiring, break lines, etc). This is by no means a certainty, but please be aware of the possibility if you visit this area.
