Description:
Abstract:
These data represent a portion of the forest inventory data used in Hudak et al. (2020) "A carbon monitoring system for mapping regional, annual aboveground biomass across the northwestern USA". This study used forest inventory data located in lidar units along with Landsat data, topographic metrics, and climate metrics to create maps of forested biomass across the northwestern USA (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and western Montana.) The data requirements for inclusion in this study included: 1. fixed-area plots, 2. plots centers were recorded using a global navigation satellite system receiver (e.g., a GPS receiver) capable of differential correction, and 3. plots were located in a lidar unit where tree data were collected within 3 years of the lidar collection. A shapefile of the lidar units can be found in Fekety and Hudak (2020, https://doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1766). The forest inventory data presented here (n = 2,680 plots) include all data that could be made publicly available and have been compiled from numerous existing datasets. The forest inventory data were collected using project-specific sampling plans and therefore these data have been formatted to be read by the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS; https://www.fs.usda.gov/fvs/). The forest inventory data in this dataset were collected between 2002 and 2017 and located in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, USA.
Purpose:
These data were used in combination with lidar, topographic, and climate datasets to create annual aboveground biomass maps across the northwestern United States for the years 2000-2016.
Supplemental_Information:
These data were published on 04/29/2020. Minor metadata updates were made On 04/18/2024.

Analytical_Tool_Description:
Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS): forest growth simulation model. It simulates forest vegetation change in response to natural succession, disturbances, and management. It recognizes all major tree species and can simulate nearly any type of management or disturbance at any time during the simulation. Outputs include tree volumes, biomass, density, canopy cover, harvest yields, fire effects, etc.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Field observations were gathered by various trained field personnel. Most measurements were estimated ocularly by field personnel. Plot locations were acquired using resource-grade GNSS receivers. These data were compiled and contributed from numerous stakeholders. An effort has been made to ensure that the data are accurate, however, unknown errors may still exist (e.g., typographical errors introduced during data entry).
Completeness_Report:
Not all fields are populated. Missing data have the entry "NA".

Some data (1,125 of 3,805 plots) used in Hudak et al. (2020), had distribution restrictions and are not included in this archived product. Data were withheld for various reasons such as the data were located on private land, were not collected using federal funds, or they were not in the public domain.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
The data requirements for inclusion in the Hudak et al. (2020) study included: 1. fixed-area plots, 2. plots centers were recorded using a global navigation satellite system receiver (e.g., a GPS receiver) capable of differential correction, and 3. plots were located in a lidar unit where tree data were collected within 3 years of the lidar collection. A shapefile of the lidar units can be found in Fekety and Hudak (2020, https://doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1766).

The data presented here have been compiled to be processed by Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) software. Users of these data should be familiar with FVS and may need to reference FVS documentation to properly interpret the data. Users should consult "Essential FVS", the relevant variant overviews, and other source documents found on the FVS website (https://www.fs.usda.gov/fvs/documents/guides.shtml).

Plot and tree data were received from various federal, state, university, and private agencies and were processed to ensure that they could be read using the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) software. (See \Supplements\ProjectSource.csv for information on data sources.) The amount of processing required depended on the dataset. For example, some datasets received from the USDA Forest Service were already in FVS-ready format and therefore required no additional processing; however, most needed additional processing. Below is brief description of some of the processing steps.

Plot data
• Assigned a unique STAND_ID identifier
• Projected plot locations to LATITUDE and LONGITUDE, if needed
• Assigned appropriate VARIANT code based on plot location
• Assigned LIDAR_UNIT and LIDAR_YEAR based on plot location
• Ensured SLOPE, ASPECT, and ELEVFT fields were populated based on plot location
• Populated sampling design fields (e.g., BASAL_AREA_FACTOR, INV_PLOT_SIZE, NUM_PLOTS)
• Assigned PV_CODE and PV_REF_CODE, if supporting data were available

Tree data
• Ensured STAND_ID identifier matched value in plot data
• Ensured tree count field was consistent with sampling design
• Assigned FVS-readable SPECIES codes, if needed
• Converted tree measurements (e.g., diamter at breast height [DBH], height[HT]) to English units, if needed
• Removed trees with DBH < 5.0 inches

For more details see Hudak et al. (2020).
