The Bechtel Trail System includes Abernethy Road, Midnight Lake Tie, Bechtel Trail, Marianne Way, and Bechtel Shortcut.

Abernethy Road leaves from the south end of Gold Lake Sno-Park and continues four miles to Deer Creek Trail 3672. This is an easy up and down route with nice views off to the west. Open glades beyond the turn-off to Bechtel Shelter provide opportunities to practice cross-country, downhill and turning techniques. From the road, several other trails are accessible. This trail is also a route to the Westview Shelter.

Midnight Lake Tie intersects Abernethy Road just past the turn-off to Bechtel Shelter and allows for a loop opportunity to Midnight Lake. This trail is mostly uphill and connects to the PCT at a small unnamed lake. The first part of this trail is marked with blue diamonds, however once it enters the Diamond Peak Wilderness, it is unmarked.

Bechtel Trail branches off Abernethy Road, crosses a creek, then climbs steeply to Bechtel Shelter and back to Abernethy Road. This route provides a loop opportunity as well as an alternative access to Bechtel Shelter.

Marianne Way branches off Bechtel Trail just past a creek. This route, which passes through open forest, is a longer but less steep alternative to Bechtel Trail to reach Bechtel Shelter.

Bechtel Shortcut connects Pengra Pass to Abernethy Road. It is often used to access the Bechtel Trail System from the Pengra Pass/Westview Trail area. It climbs west through open hemlock and lodgepole pine forest and is a nice alternative to skiing on the road.
