La Grande, Oregon – Firefighters continued to improve and hold containment lines, increasing containment to 30%. Yesterday, fire crews began mop up operations, patrolling the fire area to search for hot spots and extinguishing any heat. Firefighters on the Pickle Fire found 3 hot spots which were extinguished.  The Swan Fire reported no heat or smoke.

Today, crews will continue to hold control lines around the fire while also searching for and extinguishing any hot spots.  Containment lines will be improved to ensure fire lines will hold under predicted changing weather conditions.  Current resources include aerial support, two dozers, multiple crews and engines from Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry and contractors.

The Pickle and Swan fires are monitored daily, and firefighters will engage as necessary. Due to predicted thunderstorms that may bring lightning, firefighters are prepared to engage in any starts that may occur.

Weather – Mostly cloudy conditions with haze and patchy smoke.  A chance of showers and thunderstorms bring a chance of predicted lightning.   Additional lightning is also expected throughout the weekend.

Fires in the surrounding area have increased smoke in localized areas. For current interactive air quality maps and air quality information, visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ or https://aqi.oregon.gov/.
