Cape Horn Trail (#4418)

This strenuous trail is noted for its many scenic overlooks with classic views looking east up the Columbia River Gorge.  Hike the trail 2 miles to access the Nancy Russell Cape Horn Overlook year-round. Look for waterfalls, wildflowers and many species of birds.

You can enjoy the full 6 mile loop seasonally from July 16 to January 31. The trail on lower part of the full loop is closed each year from Feb 1 to Jul 15 to protect peregrine falcon nesting habitat.

General Information

Cape Horn Trail between Strunk Road and Overlook, and Cape Horn Overlook.

Nancy Russell Overlook is available year-round. The lower trail is closed each year from Feb 1 to Jul 15 to protect peregrine falcon nesting habitat.

  • Day hiking only. No fires or camping at Cape Horn Overlook.
  • An annual peregrine falcon closure is in effect for lower portion of trail February 1 to July 15.
  • The 1.5-mile road section of this loop hike is on a county road. Please walk single-file and be aware of vehicles as there are blind corners.
  • This is not a dog-friendly trail because of steep cliffs. Please keep your dog at home.

From Washougal, WA, travel east on Washington State Highway 14 approximately 8 miles to milepost 26.4, Salmon Falls Road. Turn left (north) on Salmon Falls Road, then immediately right on Canyon Creek Road and park in the Park and Ride parking lot. Take the trail across Salmon Falls Road from the parking lot and enjoy a scenic 2-mile hike to Cape Horn Overlook.

From Bingen/White Salmon, WA, travel west on Washington State Highway 14 approximately 26 miles to milepost 26.4, Salmon Falls Road. Turn right (north) on Salmon Falls Road and follow the directions above.
