Release Date: August 29, 2025
Contact Information: Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area    541-308-1700

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area will accept special use permit applications for recreation events and for outfitter and guides beginning Sept. 1.

Proposals should be submitted between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1 annually. Previously, the open season for outfitter and guide applications occurred earlier in the calendar year. The open season changed this year to allow prospective outfitters and guides more time to plan for the upcoming year and to provide staff with adequate time to process and issue permits, especially for winter use proposals.

A special use permit for outfitting and guiding on National Forest System land is required when an individual or group charges a fee for guiding services or provides recreation equipment or transportation. Authorized activities may include guided tours, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and more. Recreation events are commercial activities where individuals pay a fee to participate. This includes events such as races, fishing contests, festivals, adventure games, and other similar events.
