Cebolla Mesa Trail

Access: From Taos drive US Highway 64 north and continue on State Road 522 for about 15 miles to Forest Road 9, just south of Questa. A sign “Lama”, then a Cebolla Campground sign is on the right. Drive west for 1 mile on a deeply rutted road. This road may be slick and nasty when wet. Park at Cebolla Mesa campground.

Attractions and Considerations: This trail is moderately strenuous trail to the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red River. The trail is steep and rocky, at the top, then switching to moderately steep, with 22 switchbacks. The views of the gorge and the desert landscape are spectacular. At about switchback 12, notice the high mesa to the north and east side of the river. This is the La Junta trail, with many switchbacks descending 880 feet. Continue on the Cebolla trail where a bridge crosses the Red River. The trail continues in BLM managed lands. The river trial is along the east side of the Rio Grande, for another 3 miles to Big Arsenic Springs. In the summer months it can get very hot! Be prepared, by wearing a hat and bring at least 2 quarts of water.
