Colorado Trail -Sliderock Trail

Sliderock Trail #622 is a small portion of the Colorado Trail connecting Kennebec Pass and Junction Creek Trail #553. This trail offers excellent views and photographic opportunities. Starting at Junction Creek Trail (or FR 171.N access), the first section of trail climbs up several switchbacks, then eases around the ridge. The trail then breaks out of the timber and cuts upward across a talus field before reaching Kennebec Pass.

This trail has a lot of exposure. High country storms can move in quickly, so be prepared for inclement weather. No water is available on this trail.

  • Minimum/starting elevation: 10,360 feet (at Junction Creek Trail)
  • Maximum/ending elevation: 11,800 feet (at Kennebec Pass)

Getting There

Directions

From Durango, CO:

  • Champion Venture Road Access: In Durango, turn west on 25th St which turns into Junction Creek Road, 204. Follow it 3.5 miles, until it crosses the cattle guard and turns into dirt. Continue on FDR #171 for about 17.5 miles. Take FDR #171 north to the Champion Venture Rd. and go 0.7 miles to where the trail crosses the road. Limited parking is available.
  • Kennebec Pass Access: Drive west on U.S. 160 from Durango for 15 miles to the La Plata Canyon turn-off, FDR #571 (CR 124). Follow this road for 14 miles to Kennebec Pass. 4WD with good clearance is needed for the last section of the road. Ample parking is available at the trailhead.
