(STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.)  – Reconstruction work is occurring on Buffalo Pass Road (Forest Road 60) near Steamboat Springs, Colo., through August of this year. The public could experience travel delays during that time frame on the popular east/west road through the Routt National Forest.

The contractor has begun work on the project, which includes drainage/culvert replacement, establishing a minimum roadway width, and road resurfacing.

Travel delays of up to 30 minutes should be expected during construction and there will be occasional partial day closures for culvert replacements. The Forest will attempt to work with the contractor to gain advance notice on the longer closure time periods, so that public notice can occur.

Users can expect automated flaggers (light systems) and should be aware of active construction work, including equipment and haul trucks. All travelers should proceed at a slow rate of speed to maintain control so they can react quickly when encountering construction activities.

Work is occurring this summer on a portion of the west side of Buffalo Pass Road on the Routt National Forest, beginning at Dry Lake Campground and extending to 1.5 miles east of the Summit Lake Trailhead. The road connects Routt and Jackson counties and is managed by the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District on the west side and the Parks Ranger District on the east side.

The Buffalo Pass area is one of the closest National Forest access points from Steamboat Springs and is a popular, multi-use recreational hub, as well as a scenic byway from east to west over the Park Range and Continental Divide.

Information on the Routt National Forest may be found on our website or on the Forests’ 'X' and Facebook accounts. Visitors may also call the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District office at (970) 870-2299 or the Parks Ranger District at (970) 723-2700.
