Courthouse Mountain #144

The Courthouse Mountain Trail #144 begins at its intersection with the Courthouse Trail #218 at the Uncompahgre Wilderness boundary. It ends on a rocky ridge almost at the summit of Courthouse Mountain which rises 12,152 feet. The trail goes around the base of a ridge on the left and begins to climb. It then turns right bring Courthouse Mountain into view. It continues left climbing a grassy meadow to a ridge at the base of the mountains rocky steps where you can make your way to the top. The views are spectacular from the top of Courthouse Mountain. Dunsinane Mountain at 12,742 feet and Precipice Peak at 13,144 feet are to the east-southeast. South along the ridge are Redcliff at 13,642 feet and Coxcomb Peak at 13,656 feet. Cimarron Ridge is visible to the North and the Silver Jack Reservoir is in the northern distance. This trail is with in the Wilderness for its entire length and Wilderness Regulations apply.

Directions

From Ridgeway:

Follow U.S. Hwy 550 north to the intersection with Owl Creek Pass Road, Ouray County Road 10, approximately 1.7 miles north of the traffic light in Ridgeway. Continue for approximately 15 miles over Owl Creek Pass. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 860 and continue for approximately 1.6 miles. The trail is located on the right with parking available on the left.

From Montrose:

Follow U.S. Hwy 50 for approximately 21.6 miles to the intersection with Montrose County Road 858. Turn south on CR 858 and continue for approximately 19.5 miles to the intersection with Forest Service Road 860. Follow FSR 860 south for approximately 1.6 miles. The trail is located on the right with parking on the left.
