The Lolo National Forest provides a few non-traditional recreational opportunities including two disc golf courses and geocaching and letterboxing.

Disc Golf

There are two disc golf areas in the Missoula Valley for visitors to enjoy.

Geocaching & Letterboxing

Geocaching (finding hidden items using handheld Global Positioning Systems) and letterboxing (similar to geocaching, but the hidden object is a stamp which the finder uses to stamp a piece of paper proving he/she found the site) are popular recreation activities. There are websites on the Internet devoted to these activities that list the coordinates where items are buried.

Outside of designated Wilderness, no permit is required for geocaching or letterboxing as long as the activity remains non-ground disturbing and non-commercial (no charges to participants and no money is changing hands on national forest lands). Geocaching and letterboxing is illegal in designated Wilderness and is not permitted.
