West Fork Cabin

Current Conditions

This site is open year-round, during the summer it is accessible via hiking, during winter (snow) the cabin is accessible via snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

The West Fork Cabin is a 14 x 16-foot cabin is situated at one end of a small meadow. Originally built in 1931 to house “Smoke Chasers”, the cabin survived until 1998 when it burned down. The cabin was rebuilt in 1999 to resemble the original building. The West Fork Cabin is open to the public and its use is a first-come first-served Forest Service facility.

This cabin has seen heavy use over the years and should be treated with care to minimize impact.

Directions

Travel north on US 95 from Bonners Ferry Ranger District Office
Continue 11.3 miles past US 95 and US 2 junction
Left on Highway 1, continue for 2.1 miles
Left on Copeland Road, continue for 3.4 miles
Right (north) on Westside Road for 9 miles
At sweeping left hand turn, continue on paved Smith Creek Road #281 for 10.8 miles
Turn right at onto Road #2446 to end of road
Trailhead is located at the end of the road
