Paper PSW-RP-151, Berkeley, CA: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station; 6 p Station ID: RP-PSW-151 Description: A spacing study was started in 1961 to test the effects of four different spacings on the growth and development of saligna eucalyptus (Eucalyptus saligna Smith) trees in Hawaii. Spacings tested were 8 by 8 feet (2.4 m), 10 by 10 feet (3.0 m), 12 by 12 feet (3.7 m), and 14 by 14 feet (4.3 m). Plot trees were measured at ages 1, 2,5, 10, and 15 years. Measurements included d.b.h., total height, height to a 4- and 9-inch (10.2- and 22.9-cm) top (outside bark), and height to live crown. Board feet and cubic foot volumes were determined. After 15 years, trees 140 to 150 feet tall were common in all spacings. Average d.b.h. ranged from 8.6 inches (21.8 cm) in the 8" by 8" foot spacings to 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) in the 14- by l4-foot spacings. Large volumes of wood were produced, averaging more than 29,000 board feet per acre, or more than 7600 cubic feet per acre (532 m³/ha).
