Understanding the DISTRIB-II + SHIFT legend

The area most desirable for managed relocation will be the darkest shade of green (HQhigh;CLhigh). Because this may not be present for a given species, the manager can choose the next best available combination for the species. The color scheme presented assists in this selection.

The HQ-CL legend reflects the combination of DISTRIB-II (habitat quality - HQ) and SHIFT (colonization likelihood - CL) models. HQ was reclassified into 3 classes (HQlow, HQmed, HQhigh) and CL was reclassified into four classes (CLnull, CLlow, CLmed and CLhigh) and combined to generate 12 classes. Note that CLnull depicts areas where there is no colonization.

HQlow; CLnull
Habitat quality is low and colonization is absent

HQlow; CLlow
Habitat quality is low and colonization likelihood is low

HQlow; CLmed
Habitat quality is low and colonization likelihood is medium

HQlow; CLhigh
Habitat quality is low and colonization likelihood is high

HQmed; CLnull
Habitat quality is medium and colonization is absent

HQmed; CLlow
Habitat quality is medium and colonization likelihood is low

HQmed; CLmed
Habitat quality is medium and colonization likelihood is medium

HQmed; CLhigh
Habitat quality is medium and colonization likelihood is high

HQhigh; CLnull
Habitat quality is high and colonization is absent

HQhigh; CLlow
Habitat quality is high and colonization likelihood is low

HQhigh; CLmed
Habitat quality is high and colonization likelihood is medium

HQhigh; CLhigh
Habitat quality is high and colonization likelihood is high

Occupied

The color scheme depicts these combined classes:

  1. The shades of gray depict classes where HQ is present (HQlow, HQmed, HQhigh) but where colonization is absent (CLnull).
  2. The shades of yellow depict regions of HQlow and with increasing CL (CLlow, CLmed and CLhigh);
  3. The shades of blue depict regions of HQmed and with increasing CL (CLlow, CLmed and CLhigh);
  4. The shades of green with HQhigh and with increasing CL (CLlow, CLmed and CLhigh).
  5. The areas already occupied currently are in brown (Occupied).
