Northern Region Existing Vegetation Mapping Program
Page Updated: 3/02/2020
Overview
Region 1 Vegetation Mapping Program (R1 VMap) The official Data Steward for the data set is the Northern Region, Regional Remote Sensing Coordinator and the role of Data Custodians is a joint effort between the Regional GIS Group and the Forest GIS Coordinators, who maintain their own local copy of the VMap Databases and derivative products. The data lifecycle of the VMap Database, as it is delivered to the Forest, is approximately 6-8 years for the refresh cycle. During the data lifecycle, the Data Steward may initiate database maintenance and data updates, to include tabular data updates (disturbance updates), database schema updates and database version updates (ArcGIS 10.0 to ArcGIS 10.5.1).
The Forest will receive a Forest Wide product as a deliverable in the format of ESRI File Geodatabase(FGDB). The FGDB will be provided to the Forest during an official Technical Transfer session with the Data Steward and Regional Data Custodians. The FGDB will contain the official metadata for the version of VMap and will include the imagery acquisition date, imagery source and date of VMap product release.. It is recommended to use the File Geodatabase file structure when loading data into your Forest SDE so the USFS-NRIS Desktop Geospatial Interface application (Local Connection Set) will work properly when using the GI to access VMap data.
Current Work
We are currently working on updating the Flathead National Forest VMap. This will be delivered as a Geospatial product available on this site.
