Preservation 50th: Fabyan Cabin

The Forest Service and Historicorps worked together to restore Fabyan Cabin.

Built in 1923, the Fabyan Guard Station is the oldest structure built by the Forest Service in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest and is one of the oldest remaining guard stations in the eastern United States.

In 2014, the White Mountain National Forest Heritage Program and Historicorps came together, along with many volunteers, to spend 3 weeks restoring this cabin.

Three weeks of stories, photographs, memories, and friendships.  The restoration team were a dynamic group that included volunteers from local communities to other countries, project photographer and videographer; seasonal Forest Service employees, including the Youth Conservation Corps and Youth Environmental Leadership Corps; Forest Service employees who wanted to lend a hand, and the Historicorps team who lived near the site and taught skills and shared stories from other projects.  See for yourself.
