Trail Report - Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Oregon

This trail report provides the known conditions for the main summer recreation trails in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (HCNRA) in Oregon. It includes trails found in the HCNRA in Oregon along the Wild and Scenic Snake River, in the Hells Canyon Wilderness, and on the Wallowa Valley Ranger District outside of the HCNRA located east and north of Enterprise, Oregon.

A 'maintained' trail has been reviewed by a district recreation manager, the known hazards (e.g. rock slides, broken trees and branches) have been removed and annual maintenance tasks have been completed.   • Any User Reports under “Conditions/Notes” in the following tables are not validated by Forest Service personnel; however information is shared for the benefit of all users.

  • Hazards and changing weather conditions may occur at any time so always be prepared for unplanned events. Typical conditions may include downed trees, high-water crossings, water and rock slides on trails, late spring or early fall snow storms on roads and trails.

  • Please be advised that late spring and early fall snow levels are ever changing and that roads and trails may be covered with snow. Contact your local Ranger District for the most current information on roads and trails.

Kneeland Trail #1767 to Somers Point Area: Tread is hard to navigate at times. Trail runs through major burned areas and the blowdowns make it challenging at times to find the trail without a GPS. Trail is well signed. Old Somers Creek Trail #1770B to Jct.#1771: Few trees down. Tread evident. Mikes Cabin Trail #1759 to Jct. #1767: Heavily burned area. Burned dead trees down. Tread is mostly evident. Deep Creek ridge Trail #1771; Jct.1770B to 1770A: Few trees down. Tread evident. Trail is well signed. Trail #1774; Jct.Lord Flat Airstrip to Fingerboard Saddle/Jct.#1699: Trail clear. Glasseye Trail #1750 to Jct.#1771A: Trail is now cleared of all major downed trees and debris except for one tree that has fallen within one mile of the trailhead. Trail is brushy with thimbleberry. Trail is gullied-out for one mile from the trailhead, but is passable. Trail is well-signed.
