Forest Service engineers declared the Lemolo bridge unsafe for foot, bicycle and horse traffic after finding a large tree downed across the bridge.

The bridge is located on the 13-mile Dread and Terror segment of the North Umpqua Trail about three miles west from the White Mule Trailhead and 10 miles east of the Hot Springs Trailhead.

“Several people from Diamond Lake Ranger District discovered the damage to the bridge while hiking last weekend,” said Jimmy Tyree, Diamond Lake District Ranger. “Although the Dread and Terror section is a popular hike, this damage makes it a good time to explore the other 11 segments of the 79-mile-long North Umpqua Trail.”

Engineers will check the structural damage before assessing how to repair the bridge.

People wanting to hike to Lemolo Falls should plan on using the one-mile Lemolo Falls Trail  #1468. Directions can be found on the Umpqua National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/umpqua/recarea/?recid=63512.
