Tips for Reserving Campsites through Recreation.gov

Release Date: May 2, 2022

Are you a weekend camper, an open-road RVer, or a backcountry explorer? Whichever trip speaks to your adventure spirit, you can use Recreation.gov to make those summer dreams a reality. A dozen federal agencies partner with Recreation.gov to offer reservations at tens of thousands of recreation sites. The Umpqua National Forest offers reservations at 26 campgrounds, 4 large-group campsites, 3 cabins, 2 lookout towers, and 2 picnic areas.

Here are some tips for using Recreation.gov to make camping reservations for this summer:

A fire ring and picnic table are at a lakeside campsite.

  • Reserve directly through Recreation.gov. Unfortunately, our ranger district offices are not able to process reservation requests directly. If you need to make a reservation over the phone, please call the Recreation.gov reservation hotline at 877-444-6777.
  • Reserve campsites early, especially on weekends and holidays. Our reservable campgrounds, particularly those on Diamond Lake and Lemolo Lake, fill quickly in the summer months.
  • Get off the beaten path. If the campground you wish to visit is booked, don’t worry! Over half of our campgrounds are open on a first-come, first-served basis. These hidden gems are ideal locations for people looking to escape the crowds. Unlike the campgrounds on our neighboring National Forests, many of these campsites remain vacant even in the height of summer.
  • Plan ahead for spring camping. If you are interested in camping in May, you may not be able to reserve those dates on Recreation.gov. Many of our campgrounds do not open until late May or early June. However, if staffing and snow levels allow, we may open those campgrounds on a first-come, first-served basis before reservations begin. Call one of our ranger stations to ask if a campground has opened yet in this limited capacity.
  • Check ahead of time for important updates and conditions reports. We regularly update our Recreation webpage, our Facebook, and our Twitter with important campground information. This could include temporary closures, weather events, and fun activities.

Happy camping!
