Duluth, MN – June 24, 2024 – The Superior National Forest (NF) reminds visitors and residents to remain aware and diligent of flood impacted areas and related damage to roads, trails, portages, and other recreation areas across the Superior NF, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

While recent dryer weather the last few days has improved some road conditions, future summer weather will include more rain and other weather conditions that could reinitiate flooding or other damages to Superior NF infrastructure. As the damage varied across the Superior NF, we remind visitors and the public to be patient as repairs are made and alert us of any new hazards such as sinkholes.

BWCAW Entry Point Update

The following BWCAW entry points have been canceled through June 25, 2024:

  • Trout Lake Overnight Motor #1
  • Trout Lake Day Use Motor Entry Point #A
  • Slim Lake Entry Point #6.
  • Moose River North Entry Point #16.
  • Island River Entry Point #34.
  • Isabella Lake Entry Point #35.
  • Bog Lake Entry Point #67.
  • Pow Wow Trail Entry Point #86.

Be aware many of these reopened entry point roads are soft, rutted or washed out, or may have other hazards still. Vehicles with higher clearance are recommended, if available.

Travel Advisory

Visitors are encouraged to use extreme caution on canoe routes throughout the BWCAW and across the Superior NF. River and stream flows are fast moving with swift water and continue to rise in some locations; portages may be affected with flooding or more difficult to find. Stay within your skill levels and remain safe and flexible. If conditions exceed your group’s abilities, turn around and exit the area. Also, remember to always wear your life jacket.  https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/know-before-you-go/floods
