Recent PITs on the Superior National Forest:

South Kawishiwi Pavilion Rehabilitation 

In July of 2009, Forest Heritage Staff and volunteers were able re-glaze and paint windows, bat proof, and re-set doors of the 1930's CCC built log pavilion located on the scenic South Kawishiwi River.     

 

 

Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness archaeological evaluations on Lake Saganaga 

In August of 2009, volunteers assisted in excavating two sites on Lake Saganaga located on the  Minnesota and Canadian border.  After excavations, these two definite fur trade sites were then considered eligible to the National Register Historic Places.        

 

 

Gordon's Site archaeological evaluation 

June 28th - July 2nd, 2010 and July 5th - July 9th, 2010.  PIT volunteers and Heritage Staff conducted archaeological excavations at the prehistoric Gordon's Site near Gunflint Lake located on Minnesota and Canadian border.  Previous PIT projects from 1999, 2000, 2004, and 2005 have been worked on by volunteers.  After over a decade of work, the site was finished in October 2010 with the help of many past and present PIT volunteers. 

 

 

Sawbill Cabin Guard Station Stonework Rehabilitation

September 27th - October 1st, 2010.  Volunteers unearthed and re-set stone walkways laid down in the 1930's around the CCC built guard cabin.  The guard station cabin is still in use housing seasonal wilderness crews adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

 

 

Internships

The Superior National Forest Heritage Program supports university students in enhancing their education by providing internship opportunities throughout the academic year.  Students assist Forest Service archaeologists with photo accessioning, artifact accessioning, artifact photos, artifact drawings, GIS, and data entry.  If interested in an internship with the Superior Heritage Program, contact Heather Hoffman, at 218-626-4320.

 

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Started on the Superior National Forest in 1989, Passport In Time (PIT) has become a national program dedicated to preserving historic properties on Forest Service lands through volunteer contributions.
