The Siuslaw National Forest has several different types of cones, seeds, and berries that can be enjoyed for ornamental purposes or personal use. Gather seeds on the forest and plant native vegetation at home!

How to Obtain a Permit

Cones, grass, seeds, and berry permits can be purchased from the district office where you plan to harvest from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. When purchasing, you must provide a valid identification card issued by a state or U.S. federal government and your vehicle make, model, and license plate number.

Permits that require a supplemental request form can be filled out at a ranger station, printed and brought to a ranger station, or emailed to r6_siuslaw_WWWeb_Front_Desk@fs.fed.us.
 

Where to Harvest

  • Only collect cones, grass, seeds, and berries in designated areas as listed on your permit. Maps will be provided with your permit.
  • Gather grass seed, plant seed, and berries in designated areas at least 200 feet away from recreational sites (trails, campgrounds, picnic and day-use areas) and streams.
  • Harvesting is prohibited in Botanical Areas, Research Natural Areas, wilderness areas, scenic areas, and land other than designated on the map received with your permit.
     

How to Protect the Forest While Harvesting

  • Harvest products in a caring and ecologically sound way by filling any holes created, scattering debris away from roads, culverts, and ditches and leaving your harvesting area clean.
  • Pack garbage and food scraps out with you.
  • Follow the terms and conditions on your permit.
