Setting

Shaver Lake is a popular recreational lake surrounded by thick pine forests of the Sierra National Forest. Southern California Edison (SCE) owns the lands around Shaver Lake and administers recreation sites at that location.​ Operated by SCE it provides opportunities for boating camping, hiking, fishing, sightseeing.

History of Shaver Lake 

Shaver Lake was constructed by the Pacific Light and Power Corporation, later named Southern California Edison in 1927. Shaver Lake is part of the Big Creek Hydroelectric project which includes a system of lakes, tunnels, steel penstocks and power houses that convert water into electricity.

The reservoir is named for pioneer lumberman C.B. Shaver, who logged in the area around the turn of the century. In 1893 Shaver built a small rock-filled dam that impounded water to form a small mill pond to support logging operations.

Directions:

Take Hwy 168 east from Clovis to Shaver Lake. Continue on Hwy 168 through the community of Shaver Lake to access the lake and SCE Camp Edison.

Boating

A public boat launching ramp is maintained by Fresno County at the north end of the lake. Camp Edison also has boat launching facilities for its paying customers. An accessible boat access is available near Sierra Marina at the north end of the lake.

Shaver Lake is a popular lake for water sports activities. Water skiing, jet skis and windsurfing are some of the activities available at this mountain lake. Canoe and Kayak enthusiasts will find many out of the way coves and miles of shoreline to explore.

Camping

There are several campgrounds in the area that provide a wide range of services for visitors. Camp Edison, operated by Southern California Edison is a full service recreation area with campgrounds, marina and a day use area. At Dorabelle visitors will find a more primitive campground with fewer amenities. Dorabelle also has a day use area which provides parking and access to the lake. Reservations are accepted. Both Camp Edison and Dorabelle charge a fee for day use and overnight camping.

Fishing

Shaver Lake is a 1 hour drive northeast from Fresno via Highway 168 and is a popular destination for anglers looking for rainbow trout, brown trout,  kokanne salmon, smallmouth bass, bluegill, or catfish. The lake is open year around for fishing and state fishing regulations apply. Nearby creeks and streams also have seasonal closures. Hiking and Equestrian Trails Numerous hiking trails can be found along the shore of Shaver Lake. Check at Camp Edison for information on hiking trails.

Services

Shaver Lake is a full service community providing a wide range of services and accommodations for visitors. Boat launching facilities, mooring and rentals are available at several local marinas. Horseback riding is available nearby.
