Accessible Recreation Opportunities
Each year, thousands of visitors are attracted to a multitude of recreation opportunities on the San Bernardino National Forest. We are a customer-driven Forest Service. One of our goals is to improve accessibility to recreational opportunities for persons with disabilities, as prescribed in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
How to Get Here
Rim of the World National Scenic Byway—Begins on Highway 15 in the Cajon Pass and follows Highway 138, 18 and 38 for 107 miles. Travelers enjoy vistas of breathtaking mountain scenery and sprawling deserts.
San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains— Access from Interstate 10, 15, or 215 Highways 138, 18, 330 and 38 will also lead you into the Forest.
San Jacinto Mountains—Access from State Highway 243 in Banning, State Highway 74 in Palm Desert or Hemet, State Highway and State Highway 371 in Anza.
Weather
During the summer months, temperatures range from 90 degrees during the day to 50 degrees at night. Thunderstorms may occur in the summer months. Winter temperatures can drop to 10 degrees or less in the higher elevations, but usually range from the low 60’s during the day to the mid 20’s at night. Winter storms generally bring rain and snow to the mountains from mid November to March.

The Ranger Station is accessible to the public for forest information as well as an accessible restroom for visitor use. The Native Plant Garden Trail is an accessible interpretive trail with native vegetation. This trail is adjacent to the Ranger Station and is approximately ¼ mile in length.
Applewhite Picnic Area—This picnic area, located along Lytle Creek, is fully accessible with amenities at the picnic sites as well as accessible restrooms.
Middlefork Trailhead and Day Use Areas—There are accessible restrooms available at each of these locations.

The first floor of the station is accessible for visitor information as well as an accessible restroom for public use. Falls Picnic Area—Accessible restrooms are available at this site.
Thurman Flats Picnic Area- This area has accessible sites with tables, grills and restrooms.

Mountain Top Ranger District | Big Bear Discovery Center

Big Bear Discovery Center—Is a fully accessible Visitor Information Center located ¼ mile west of the Ranger Station on Hwy 38. The Discovery Center offers information regarding the Big Bear Area, a forest store, accessible programs for the public and restroom facilities.
Alpine Pedal Path—This accessible trail connects the Big Bear Discovery Center with the Cougar Crest Trailhead and a pathway along the North shore of Big Bear Lake. Approximately 3.5 miles in length this gentle trail has some magnificent views of the lake.
Jenks Lake—Jenks Lake provides accessible fishing from either the fishing pier or from several fishing pads along the shore. An accessible trail is located along the parking lot side of the lake. There are accessible picnic sites and restrooms also available at this location.
Grout Bay Picnic Area—Accessible picnic sites and restrooms are available.
Meadow’s Edge Picnic Area—This area has accessible sites with tables, a paved sidewalk and restrooms.
Serrano Campground—This campground has five accessible sites with pavement throughout, accessible restrooms and showers. There are electricity and sewer hookups at some of the sites.
Children’s Forest Trailhead—This area, designed especially for children, has approximately 1 mile of paved accessible trail. Accessible restrooms are also available.
Dogwood Campground—This campground has two accessible sites with amenities including tables, fire rings, grills and restrooms with accessible showers.
Heart Bar Campground—There are accessible restrooms and two accessible campsites.
Shady Cove Group Campground—This site has three group campsites with accessible tables, grills and restrooms.
Switzer and Crest Park Picnic Areas—These picnic areas have accessible sites and restrooms.

Lake Fulmor—This site provides access to fishing, picnicking or a stroll along the shore of the lake. Accessible restrooms are available.
Lake Hemet—This lake has some accessible picnic tables and the restrooms are accessible.
Pinyon Flat Campground—This campground has some accessible sites and restrooms.
State-Offered Special Passes
The State of California offers free fishing licenses for those with disabilities. Contact the nearest California Department of Fish and Game Office for a free annual fishing license or contact their Sacramento office.
The State of California offers a Disability Discount Pass
(which entitles the holder up to 50% discounts on admission into State facilities only—Not applicable at Forest Service or other Federally-operated recreation sites). Contact the nearest California Department of Parks and Recreation for a Disability Discount Pass

Inter Agency (IA) Passes
IA Senior and IA Access Passes are available at any Forest Service Office. These passports entitle the holder to free access to (and reduced fees for) campgrounds and special programs administered by the FS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USFWS, and USACOE which ALL oversee Federal recreation areas.
IA Senior Passes cost a one-time fee of $80 (although the fee must be paid again in the event of a lost or stolen passport). U.S. Citizens 62 years of age or older qualify.
IA Access Passports are free of charge to any U.S. Citizen with proof of permanent disability.
