Description:

Abstract:: This polygon feature class represents vegetation burn severity calibrated to percent change in canopy cover for selected fires in California.
Purpose:: These data were created by the USDA Forest Service fire and fuels monitoring project to support monitoring of wildland fire and fire regimes. These data will allow better understanding of current fire regimes, improve the accuracy of fire perimeter data, and add spatial data on fire severity and complexity.
Supplemental_Information:: These data are derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. The pre-fire and post-fire subscenes were used to create a Relative Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (RdNBR). The RdNBR is correlated to the variation of burn severity within a fire. The RdNBR data are calibrated with the Composite Burn Index (CBI). The severity ratings provided by the derived products listed below are based on the severity to vegetation.

This database may contain more than one assessment for each fire: initial and/or extended. Initial assessment data can differ from extended assessment data because: 1.) The calibrations used to derive the severity data are based on one year post-fire field data. Calibrations for Initial assessments were derived through regression modeling of satellite reflectance values from imagery collected one year post-fire to imagery acquired immediate post-fire. 2.) Imagery used to make initial assessments are acquired immediately after containment which can be late in the year when sun angles are low due to fire containment dates and therefore fire effects on north facing slopes can be hidden due to topographic shadows caused by low sun angles causing high severity fire effects in these data to be under represented. Low to moderate severity in dense stands on east, west or south aspects may also be under-represented due to a low sun illumination angle. 3.) Imagery used for extended assessments are acquired the year after the fire occurred and can therefore include effects due to resprouting vegetation, delayed mortality of trees, and any management actions that have taken place between the fire containment date and image acquisition date.

Satellite data for initial assessments may have been acquired before final containment. Therefore additional fire effects may have occurred after satellite acquisition date. See metadata for dates of satellite imagery. The user should reconcile dates with fire containment dates before use. Data used for initial assessments may be acquired by more than one satellite due to lack of satellite availability. When Landsat TM data are available initial assessments are based upon the NBR index, otherwise the assessments are based upon NDVI. See the metadata for each fire to determine imagery used in the assessment.

This field is a recommendation as to which assessment best represents fire effects. For example, when salvage logging occurred before the extended assessment was made and an initial assessment exists the initial assessment is usually flagged as the best assessment, otherwise the extended assessment is flagged. When the fire burned primarily in shrubs/chaparral then the initial assessment, if it exists, is usually set to best. Other conditions that may influence choice of best assessment include late season imagery acquisition or satellite image issues. If the post-fire image is too late in the year, which sometimes occurs in initial assessments, then the extended assessment is best. Note, the assessment which is set to best may change between database versions because additional assessments may be added to the database at different times (e.g. initial assessments are usually added a year before extended assessments).
