Invasive Species: Terrestrial Animals

Invasive Animals of Concern

Two feral hogs and piglets

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) have recently extended their range into New Mexico and Arizona from southern States. Feral swine are comprised of free-roaming European wild boars, former domestic pigs, and hybrids.

Rooting in the ground by feral swine for food can create large areas of disturbance that potentially causes soil erosion, water quality degradation, and property damage. They will also consume prey such as ground-nesting birds. Unless controlled by hunting or through animal damage control efforts by agencies such as USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), feral swine will continue to increase unchecked.
