Wildernesses of the Northern Region

A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain. ~ Wilderness Act, September 3, 1964

Wild places stir our souls. In the 1960s Congress understood their importance and acted to preserve many wild places as Wilderness or Wild and Scenic Rivers. Much of the Northern Region remains remote and wild today; five million acres are preserved within the Wilderness System and eight rivers are part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

Untrammeled

Untrammeled is an inspiring 27-minute film about passing the torch for wilderness to the next generation.  Filmed in Montana’s Scapegoat and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas, it features Montana high school and college age youth, as they experience wilderness, some for the very first time.

The film was produced by the U.S. Forest Service, Northern Region, in partnership with Back Country Horsemen of Montana, local outfitters, the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center, Wilderness Institute University of Montana, Montana Wilderness Association, Missoula Public Schools, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Education Department and others.

It was produced for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Wilderness Act in 2014.
