Ironwood, MI– The U.S. Forest Service is excited to plow access to several recreation sites across the Ottawa National Forest. Plowing will occur throughout the 2023/2024 winter season pending equipment and personnel availability. The access will be plowed Monday through Friday no sooner than 24 hours after the storm has ended. The Ottawa needs to prioritize roads and admin facilities and after large snowstorms, it may take longer to plow recreational facilities.

“The Ottawa is thrilled to be able to offer a robust winter recreational experience to the public,” says Megan Impson, Ottawa’s Recreation Program Manager. “Plowing access into recreation sites provides access to numerous snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing experiences.”

The Ottawa will be plowing access to the following locations:

Courtney Lake Day Use Area and Boat Launch, Clark Lake Recreational Area, Allen Lake, Moon Lake, Golden Lake, Imp Lake, Whitefish Trail, Black River Harbor and Waterfalls, Bobcat Lake, Robinson Lake, Streusser Lake, Elbow Lake, Hagerman Lake, Kakabika Falls, Langford Lake, Lake Ottawa, North Country Trailhead access off County Rd 519, and Redboat Lake.

When recreating outdoors in the winter, be familiar with the area and have a reliable map and compass. Don’t recreate alone without backup plans in place. Dress appropriately in layers for changing winter weather conditions and always carry food and water. Minor injuries can turn life threatening in the winter.
