National Forest Seasonal and Weather Road Closures

Certain roads are seasonally closed to motorized vehicles to help protect wildlife habitat, decrease wildlife disturbance, reduce road maintenance costs, and in specific cases to protect public safety during long bouts of adverse weather.

On all Forest Service roads, emergency closures due to weather or resource conditions can occur at any time. For current road conditions and status, contact the Ranger District or the Blue Ridge Parkway Closure Map.

DO NOT BLOCK ANY GATE.  Vehicle may be ticketed and/or towed.

Pisgah Ranger District: 828-877-3265

  • Lickstone Road (FS97): Closes to motor vehicles from Jan 2 to Sept 1 each year.
  • Ivestor Gap Gate (FS816): Closes to motor vehicles from Jan 1 to Aug 15 each year.

Appalachian Ranger District: 828-689-9694

  • Stony Fork (FS 63): Remains closed due to storm damage

The following roads will close seasonally from 1st week of January to 1st week of April:

  • Flat Top (FS 278)
  • Cataloochee (FS 3549)
  • Hurricane Gap (FS 467)
  • Rich Mountain Fire Tower (FS 467A)
  • Long Arm (FS 287)
  • Mills Ridge (FS 113)
  • South Toe River (FS 472)
  • Big Ivy (FS 74)

Grandfather Ranger District: 828-652-2144

  • Old House Gap (FS 192): closed for resource protection and maintenance.

The following roads and recreation areas are open seasonally, from April 1 - January 1:

  • Curtis Creek Campground and Road (FS 482)
  • New Ginger Cake (FS 496)
  • Thunder Hole (FS 4071)
  • Steels Creek (FS 228)
  • Lost Cove (FS 464A)
  • Brown Mountain OHV Area (FS 299)
  • Table Rock Picnic Area (FS 99)

The following roads and recreation areas are open seasonally, from September 1 - January 1:

  • Dobson Knob (FS 106) – western half of the road at the second gate
  • Pearcy Creek (FS 4101)
  • Carrol Creek (FS 4096)

The following roads remain closed to motorized traffic due to storm damage:

  • Jarrett Creek (FS 4030)
  • Marks Mountain (FS 451)
  • Big Chestnut (FS 198)
  • Craig Creek / Mortimer-Piedmont (FS 982)

Nantahala Ranger District: 828-524-6441

The following roads open seasonally from April 1 - January 1:

  • Boardtree (FS 388)
  • Upper Nantahala (FS 67)
  • Shingletree (FS 713)
  • Shope Fork (FS 751)
  • Ball Creek (FS 83)
  • Connelly Creek (FS 86 through Alarka-Laurel)
  • Wayah Bald (FS 69)
  • Winding Stairs (FS 422)
  • Little Yellow Mtn. (FS 367) - remains closed until further notice due to storm damage.
  • Big Creek (FS 4567)
  • Cold Spring Gap (FS 4663)
  • Moses Creek (FS 4651)
  • Old Bald Road (FS 4652)
  • Sugar Creek (FS 4665)
  • Gage Creek (FS 4648)
  • Wolf Mountain (FS 4663C)

  • Stateline Loop (FS 420-6)

Croatan National Forest: 252-638-5628

  • Great Lake Rd (FS 126): Closed to motor vehicle traffic for road repairs until May 31, 2024.
  • Road maintenance is occurring along the following roads but the roads will remain open. Maintenance on these roads will last until February 19, 2025. Please use caution when traveling and pay attention for heavy machinery and trucks:
