Location

The District office is located in Hot Springs, SD a town of around 4,000, which is nestled in the southern Black Hills, surrounded with charm, scenic beauty and friendly people.  In Hot Springs you can feel the rumble of the ground as hundreds of horses race across the prairie at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, and you can take a walk on the wild side at the nationally renowned Mammoth Site. You can witness thousands-of-year-old mammoth bones in an active paleontology research site at the Mammoth Site, which offers real excavation of fossils right before your eyes.

Five National Park system destinations are within easy driving distance of the Fall River Ranger District.  These include Mount Rushmore National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Badlands National Park, and Devils Tower National Monument.  In addition, the nation’s second largest state park, Custer State Park, is located in the southeastern Black Hills area.

 

Recreation & History

Soak in an adventure at Evans Plunge, the world’s largest indoor fresh natural mineral water swimming pool and water park or go on an underground adventure at Wind Cave National Park. A testament of time, the Cave is the 4th largest cave in the world.

This town is rich in history, spoiled with beauty and surrounded by charm. In 2009, Hot Springs was recognized as a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Hot Springs is home to 22 churches, 17 motels with 384 rooms, 6 Bed & Breakfast Inns, 7 Banquet Rooms, 8 Caterers, 11 Meeting Rooms, and 1 Entertainment Convention Center.  The Mueller Civic Center has seating capacities of 403 in the Theater, 1250 in the Auditorium, 80 in the Conference Room, and 150 in the Annex.  Hot Springs boasts 5 parks, 3 ball fields, 3 tennis courts, 1 golf course, 1 bowling alley, 1 theatre, 1 swimming pool, 2 trail rides and 44 active clubs and organizations.

Hot Springs provides a well rounded health environment with the Fall River Community Hospital and a VA Medical Center.  Care Facilities include Castle Manor, Michael J. Fitzmaurice SD State Veterans Home, and the Pine Hills Retirement and Assisted Living Center.  There are 4 Family Medical Clinics, 4 Chiropractic Clinics, 2 Dental Clinics, and one Eye Clinic.

The School system consists of 2 Elementary (Pre-K to 5) with approximately 20 teachers & 393 students, 1 Middle School (6-8) with approximately 21 teachers & 240 students, 1 High School (9-12) with approximately 27 teachers & 316 students, and one Private Elementary (Pre-K to 5) with 3 teachers and 40 students.  http://www.hssd.k12.sd.us
