In Shape with the Baker River Hotshots
As a Type 1 firefighter, you will meet the most arduous fitness and endurance requirements.
Each crew member is expected to report for duty in excellent physical condition. Crew safety depends on it. During the first day of employment, candidates must demonstrate their ability to perform at the fitness level of a Type I crew as outlined in the Standards for IHC Operations Guide:
- 1.5 mile run in 10.5 minutes or less
- 40 sit-ups in 60 seconds
- 25 push-ups in 60 seconds
- 6 chin-ups
- Three-mile hike with 45 lbs. in 45 minutes or less
Crew members engage in regimented physical training up to two hours daily, starting with an organized callisthenic and stretching session, including push-ups, crunches and lunges and run three to six miles over a variety of terrain. After the run, the crew performs sets of chin-ups and dips, then lift weights on their own. Afternoon power hikes further condition members for the fire season.
