E-Biking on the MBRTB

an ebiker takes a break on the side of a road and looks over their shoulderE-bikes are becoming increasingly popular among outdoor recreationists for use on national forests and grasslands and other public lands. These vehicles provide access to more destinations and routes for many users who may not have been able to visit them previously. With this new mode of access, it is important to know the local rules around E-Bike use to ensure safe travel.

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland categorizes all classes of E-Bikes as motorized vehicles. As such, E-Bikes must stay on motorized roads and trails, which can be found on our Motorized Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs). It is the visitor’s responsibility to know where they are riding at all times and what restrictions may exist.

Ride Responsibly

  • Minimize wheel spin. On switchbacks, avoid roosting around the apex of the turn when climbing or brake-sliding during descent, both of which gouge the trail. Drive over obstacles and through puddles to avoid widening the trail.
  • Slow down when sight lines are poor. Cross streams only at designated fording points, where the trail crosses the stream.
  • Comply with all signs and respect barriers.
  • Slow down when sight lines are poor and when around other visitors to ensure everyone has a good experience.
