Stagger Inn & Granite Falls Scenic Area Open for Day Use Only

The Forest Service has re-opened Stagger Inn, the Roosevelt Grove of Ancient Cedars and Granite Falls to the public for day use only. The sites were originally closed due to hazardous trees, but trees identified as potential hazards to the public have been removed and the Forest Service has rescinded the full closure order. Due to continuing concerns for the stability of the some trees in the area, for the remainder of 2014 overnight camping will not be permitted at Stagger Inn Scenic Area.

“We recognize the importance and value of the site to generations of campers and will do our best to deem the site safe for camping in the future” noted Matt Davis, Priest Lake District Ranger.  “Over the course of the next year the Forest Service will be monitoring other trees and soil conditions on the site determining if additional tress need to be removed and whether to open the site for camping in the future.”

High winds on the night of August 25^th, 2013 caused several trees to become weakened and damaged in the Stagger Inn Campground, resulting in several fallen trees and causing one fatality at the campground. The Forest Service reminds visitors that they should be aware of uncertain and changing conditions when visiting any area of the forest.
