The Bridgeport Ranger District office is located in Bridgeport (pop. 575), California, The District also lies in four counties including Douglas, Lyon, and Mineral in Nevada and Mono in California. The Bridgeport Ranger District is over one million acres in both Nevada (637,654) and California (375,721).

The District is known for being a popular recreation spot in the Eastern Sierra Nevada and western Great Basin, since it borders the Yosemite National Park. The District also manages a congressionally designated winter recreation area located near Sonora Pass in California, which offers extreme backcountry snowmobiling with deep snow, big bowls, and steep mountainous terrain.

Rising from the Great Basin to the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the District includes breathtaking vistas of vast landscapes in both California and Nevada. Elevations on the District range from 4,500 feet at Wilson Canyon to 12,370 feet at Dunderberg Peak, which is the highest point on the Forest. The District spans five mountain ranges and features alpine lakes, rugged backcountry, and beautiful meadows. Vegetation ranges from high alpine plant communities to salt desert flats.

Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area

Opens to snowmobiling when snow levels meet the minimum requirement of 24 inches. However, people are still allowed to use this area to enjoy other recreational activities such as snow shoeing and cross country skiing. The area closes every year at the end of April regardless of snow cover. The intent of this action is to reduce user conflicts as snow melts and the California State Route 108 (Sonara Pass Road) corridor nears opening.

Permits are required for each person entering the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area. They are FREE and can be obtained online. Self-issued permits are also available at the People’s Gate kiosk on California State Route 108 (Sonara Pass Road) about six miles west of U.S. Route 395 between the towns of Bridgeport and Walker, California.
