Kid’s Day! Paws and Claws Ducks, beavers and bears, Oh My!  Learn how to identify the tracks of local Michigan wildlife and how the different foot shapes help animals survive.  A fun interactive program that will allow children to take home their own track prints.

Life of a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) Enrollee There is no better way to teach students about the Great Depression than through the eyes of a CCC boy.  The spectators will learn about growing up in the Great Depression, and hear stories about young men who learned discipline, respect, and the value of hard work.  Presented by Bill Jamerson.

Kid’s Day! Life of a Wildland Firefighter Have you ever used a Pulaski?  Been inside a fire shelter?  Handled the hose of a fire truck? Learn how firefighters do their jobs and about the equipment they use.  Watch for a visit from Smokey!

Blue Water Ramblers Banjo-Jim, Bear and Tom sing of the shanty boys and the sailors that carried Michigan lumber to market.  The Blue Water Ramblers’ repertoire comes right out of our Michigan life experiences and the history of the Great Lakes region.  It includes lake shanties, lumberman ballads, and Michigan humor.  These combine into a versatile collection to the delight and entertainment of their audiences.

Kid’s Day! Shanty Boys Journey into Michigan’s lumbering and immigrant past and join Shanty Boy Jim Murphy as he recreates the great lumber boom of the 19th Century.  Using the concertina, button accordion, bones and fiddle, Jim will involve you in a memorable lumber camp experience. (and you’ll learn a lot too!)  Presented by Michael Deren.

Campfire Program: Leave No Trace Do you know how to select the best location to pitch a tent? What to do with your trash or how to build a campfire that is safe?  Meet with Ranger Pline at Round Lake Campground to learn to leave no trace.

Vendor’s Day! Come join our first annual local artist day at Lumberman’s Monument.  All vendors’ are from within our surrounding area; made within Michigan.  All merchandise is made in Michigan to help support our states economy.  Vendors will be available throughout the day.

Kid’s Day! Owls; Birds of Prey Owl Pellets are formed when owls swallow their prey whole, then regurgitate a pellet containing what they ate.  Come and spend the afternoon finding out what the owls ate as you dissect their pellet.  Registration required call: Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center at (989) 362 – 8961

Schooner Captain Sail the Great Lakes delivering passengers and cargo to ports from Buffalo to Chicago to Sault Ste. Marie.  Join the crew! Raise the sails! Sing songs!  Learn about the beaver, lumber, iron, copper and fishing industries.  Join Historical Interpreter Michael Deren and take a historical, musical, educational, participativejourney, appropriate for all ages, on a Great Lakes Schooner.

Kid’s Day! Fun in a Lumbercamp Long before there was television, video games and Wii, kids and their families found ways of entertainment.  Learn some good old fashioned games played in the 1800’s while having fun outdoors.

Bats of Michigan Take a tour of Michigan’s nocturnal wildlife.  Students will learn the many different species of bats in Michigan as well as basic general physical characteristics, eating habits, nesting locations and movement. There will be a fun exercise showing the different parts of a bat and all the students will make their own bat to take home with them.

Kid’s Day! Child Vs. Wild Do you enjoy the great outdoors? Come over the hill and through the woods as we go on a hiking adventure!  Learn to hike safely and what to bring on your hiking adventures. Forest Discovery Hike after program, please wear proper foot wear.

Kid’s Day! I Can’t See the Forest For The Trees When humans make changes to the land, we always affect the wildlife and plants that live here.  Learn how foresters balance the needs of plants, animals and people when making decisions on how a forest will be used.

Kid’s Day! Leaf Prints Learn to identify trees by their leaves and make a leaf print t-shirt to take home.  Bring a clean white t-shirt to the program.  Some shirts will be available to purchase.

Become a Junior Forest Ranger Use this opportunity to get involved with the forest in many fun and exciting ways! Let us help you earn your Junior Forest Ranger badge and help Smokey prevent wildfires!

Kid’s Day! Let’s Go Green! Come learn how you can help save our beautiful planet for everyone to enjoy.  Everyone’s actions make the difference. Watch for Woodsy Owl!

 

All programs are free of charge.  Donations are accepted in the Visitor Center to help cover expenses.

Native Michigan Plant Walk will be held every Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  Walks will start at the Visitor Center flag pole and last about an hour.  Come prepared to hike through the forest and discover neat things about animals, plants and more!
