Great Snow

When there’s no snow elsewhere, winter sports enthusiasts look to the U.P. With 200 inches of snowfall yearly in some areas, it’s no wonder! The Hiawatha National Forest, positioned in the “lake effect snow” shadows of Lakes Superior and Michigan, is in the heart of a true winter sports wonderland.  Cross-country ski trail systems offer nearly 90 miles of skating and diagonal-stride skiing of renowned quality. Snowmobilers visiting the Hiawatha find hundreds of trail miles connecting with the statewide system.  

Backwoods snow-shoeing, ice fishing, and dog sledding are options for those who prefer more primitive recreation. Two log cabins are available to rent for a winter backwoods experience with warmth!
