Newly Accessible and Interpreted Trail to Open

Forest Service to Rededicate Trail of the Molten Land at Lava Lands Visitor Center

BEND – This Sunday the Deschutes National Forest will rededicate an old classic with a new twist when it reopens the newly accessible and interpreted Trail of the Molten Land at Lava Lands Visitor Center.

The dedication ceremony will begin at noon on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the trail at the Visitor Center, 58201 South Highway 97, approximately 10 miles south of Bend.  Several family-friendly activities will follow the ceremony.

The Trail of the Molten Land has told the story of volcanic activity at Newberry National Volcanic Monument’s Lava Lands Visitor Center for many years; however, it wasn’t fully accessible to all visitors and needed new interpretive panels.

This past year the trail was made fully accessible and 11 new interpretive panels were developed under the theme, “How Lava Changed a Landscape.”  With the new interpretive panels installed along the trail, visitors can connect to the geologic events of the past as well as the current processes of plants and animals adapting to the landscape. The panels were developed in partnership with Discover Your Northwest.
