Lava Lands Visitor Center to Close for the Season

New frontage road also will close

BEND- Many activities at Newberry National Monument are drawing to a close as summer visitors leave and the fall season begins.

Lava River Cave closed on October 1 and Lava Lands Visitor Center’s last day will be Monday, October 10, 2011.  In addition, the new frontage road that accesses the Lava River Cave from the visitor center will be closing on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.

The road will be closed at the junction with Cottonwood Road at Highway 97 exit 151 as well as at the junction with Forest Service Road 9702 / Benham Falls Road at the Lava Lands Visitor Center.

The road closure will benefit wildlife by facilitating deer migration via the new underpass as well as reducing the likelihood of human disturbance to hibernating bat populations in Lava River Cave.

South bound visitors may still access Benham East Day Use site with the existing entrance off of Highway 97 at Lava Lands Visitor Center.  Exit will be provided for at the same location rather than via the new frontage road being closed.  Northbound Highway 97 travelers wishing to visit this area will be subject to traveling to the Baker /Knott Rd. exit 143 to then return on Highway 97 south for access.
