Underpass Provides Safer Access to Attractions

BEND - Three key attractions of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument will have improved access for visitors beginning early next week.

At 9 a.m. on Monday, August 22, an underpass from Highway 97 at the Cottonwood Exit (151) will open to the public. The underpass provides improved access to Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte, and Benham East Day Use Area from Highway 97. The building of the underpass will improve visitor’s safety as they travel to the popular attractions by controlling access on and off Highway 97.

“We are excited to have the underpass in place ahead of the Labor Day weekend. Our visitors can come and enjoy our great facilities without a detour, “ said Scott McBride, USFS Newberry National Volcanic Monument Manager.

Access to Lava Lands Visitor Center for north bound traffic has been detoured since the season opening in 2011 for construction of the underpass. Oregon Department of Transportation completed the underpass ahead of its scheduled construction period, allowing the underpass to open early.

Background:

Lava Lands Visitor Center showcases interpretive trails and an exhibit hall outlining how our local geology, ecology, climate, and culture are all interwoven. Vehicles must display a valid recreation pass and passes can be purchased on site.
