Forest Visitor Maps


These maps also show motorized and non-motorized trails, attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities.  The Custer Gallatin National Forest Visitor Maps include elevation contours and are at a scale of either 1:63,360 (one inch to the mile) or 1:126,720 (½ inch to the mile).

 

  • Hardcopy Forest Visitor Maps

    Hardcopy Forest Visitor Maps can be purchased at our Ranger District offices or online at the USGS Store. Forest Visitor Maps cost between $9.00 and $14.00 each for paper copies, and around $10.00 each for digital copies.

  • Digital Forest Visitor Maps

  • Forest Service Digital Maps

    Forest Service Digital Maps are produced at national, regional and forest level scales.

There are 6 Forest Visitor Maps available for the Custer Gallatin National Forest:

  • Ashland Ranger District: covers Southeast Montana around Ashland, MT.
  • Beartooth Ranger District: covers the Beartooth Front, the Beartooth Unit of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, the Beartooth Pass area, Cooke City, and the Pryor Mountains.
  • Custer Gallatin National Forest West: covers the Gallatin, Madison, and Henry's Lake Mountain Ranges. Includes Hyalite Canyon, Hebgen Lake Basin, and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.
  • Custer Gallatin National Forest North: covers the Bridger, Bangtail, and Crazy Mountains.
  • Custer Gallatin National Forest Central: spans the Yellowstone, Gardiner, and Beartooth Ranger Districts from the Yellowstone River East. Includes the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, Boulder River, Deer Creek vicinity, Cooke City, and the Beartooth Front.
  • Sioux Ranger District: covers the Chalk Buttes, Ekalaka Hills, and Long Pine Land Units in Southeast Montana. Covers the East and West Short Pines, North and South Cave Hills, and Slim Buttes Land Units in Northwest South Dakota.

 

Wilderness Maps

Wilderness maps are topographic maps that show natural features such as mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation using contour lines depicting elevation gain or loss. These maps are useful for those planning and completing trips into designated Wilderness as they highlight Wilderness boundaries, trailheads, and trails.  The scale of both Custer Gallatin National Forest Wilderness maps is 1:63,360 (one inch to the mile).

  • There are two Wilderness Maps available for the Custer Gallatin National Forest:
    • Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness
    • Lee Metcalf Wilderness 

Forest Topography Maps

Topographic or "Quad" Maps are at a scale of 1:24,000 (2.64 inches to the mile), and offer the most detailed view of the terrain.  These maps feature elevation contours and are considered essential to carry for those venturing into the backcountry via an established trail system or cross-country on foot or horseback.

    Forest Service Topography: These maps overlay Forest Service assets, such as roads, trails, and campgrounds, on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps. They are available for download by quadrangle. Maps can be downloaded free of charge.

    The Interactive Forest Visitor Map is an online or mobile app that provides the public with information on Forest Service roads, trails, recreation sites, wilderness areas, and wild and scenic rivers.
