Chatsworth, GA. (September 9, 2014) – The U. S. Forest Service plans to temporarily close sections of Forest Service Road 68 on the Chattahoochee National Forest for reconstruction beginning September 15 and lasting through October 1, 2014.  The closure area will include Forest Service Road 68 from the intersection of Holly Creek Gap and Forest Service Road 68 to the intersection of Forest Service Road 17 in Murray County.  The closure will be in effect 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays. The road will be open to travel on weekends.

“We are temporarily closing the road during reconstruction for the safety of the public, as the road will be impossible to travel safely while the work is taking place,” said District Ranger Jeff Gardner.  “We’re doing our best to get the improvements made as quickly as possible, and we are grateful to our forest visitors for their patience as we complete this important work.”

Although the road will be open evenings and weekends, the roadbed may not be suitable for some passenger vehicles because of uneven surfaces. Drivers should use caution and good judgment when travelling this route while it is under construction. Alternative access to Lake Conasauga can be obtained by Forest Service Road 17.
