Offices Close Wednesday June 19 in Observance of Juneteenth Federal Holiday

Fee-Free Day at Many Day-Use Recreation Sites on June 19

Albuquerque, NM – June 17, 2024 -  The Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands Supervisor’s Office and all Ranger District Offices will close on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day Federal Holiday. Essential services not included.

The Cibola NF & NGs offices will resume regular office business hours on Thursday, June 20.

Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a day that commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Historically and culturally, celebrated on June 19th, it marks the day in 1865 that Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas, and informed slaves there that the Civil War ended, and slavery was abolished. In 2021, President Biden signed a law establishing June 19th as a federal holiday in acknowledgment of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Fees Waived at Many Day-Use Recreation Sites June 19

The Cibola NF & NGs will waive fees at many day-use recreation sites on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday.

Remaining Fee-Free Days for 2024 are:

  • Juneteenth: June 19
  • National Public Lands Day: September 28
  • Veterans Day: November 11
