Fuels Management & Prescribed Fire

Fuels management is an important part of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland. With the help of our local, state and federal partners, we have been increasing the scope and scale of our forest restoration efforts with the Northern Colorado Fireshed Collaborative. Working closely with our partners, we are working to improve forest health at the landscape scale across private and public lands.

Fuels management is done in an effort to reduce the risk of wildfires, improve ecosystems and improve public safety. Implementation of projects can include both mechanical treatment of fuels and/or prescribed fire.

A prescribed fire is a fire ignited intentionally that burns under specified conditions identified in a burn plan that allow the fire to be confined to a predetermined area and produce the fire behavior required to meet planned forest restoration objectives. Each year, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland implements prescribed fire, both boradcast and pile burning, on thousands of acres in an effort to improve forest and watershed health and wildlife habitat, while reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires.

This map shows all the locations on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests where both broadcast burns and pile burning may occur, including the current status of that particular project. It is a great resource for both forest neighbors and those visiting the Forest.

  • Pile Burning

The U.S. Forest Service piles and burns woody debris after fuel reduction work to reduce the fire risk it poses. A list of pile burning locations is posted annually on Inciweb.

  • Broadcast Burning

The U.S. Forest Service conducts broadcast burns to strategically reduce hazardous fuels and improve wildlife habitat and forest health in a pre-identified area under specific conditions.

  • Mechanical Treatment
