Temporary Closure for Jenny Creek Restoration and Motorized Trail Reroute Project

Release Date:

Contact(s): Marcia Gilles

BOULDER, Colo. – The Jenny Creek area near Rollins Pass on the Boulder Ranger District will be temporarily closed for approximately six weeks while the contract crew completes creek and trail restoration work.

The Jenny Creek motorized trail (FST 808.1) follows the historic Boulder Wagon Road, west of Rollinsville, Colorado.  Over decades of use, a portion of the trail located along the creek became severely damaged, eroding the creek and redirecting the creek channel onto the road.  The Forest Service has rerouted this portion of the motorized trail away from the creek and reestablished the motorized trail.  Additionally, mountain pine beetle infested hazardous trees along the new route have been removed. The next phase of this project is to repair the creek and restore the damaged riparian and adjacent uplands areas.

In order to provide for public safety, and allow uninterrupted work by the contractor, the Forest Service is temporarily closing the restoration area to all entry. The contractor will use heavy equipment and be moving large items including trees and boulders.

The closure includes motorized access into the area on Forest Service Trail 808.1 (from Yankee Doodle Lake) and Forest Service Road 502.1 (from Rollins Pass Road).  Motorized visitors will be able to use the Moffat/Rollins Pass Road during the project work.  Please click here for the closure map.

The Boulder Ranger District obtained a grant from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) program to complete the Jenny Creek motorized trail reroute and restoration work.  The local Rising Sun Four Wheel Drive Club and the Trout Unlimited Chapter; Boulder Flycasters are in partnership with the Forest Service, supporting the project with volunteers and financial contributions.

“While inconvenient timing for some visitors, we appreciate adherence to the temporary closure to benefit project safety and effectiveness and to maintain long-term access to the Jenny Creek motorized trail, “said Sylvia Clark, Boulder District Ranger.
