Fire Danger Rating Lowered to High
Release Date:
ARCADIA, Calif. – Effective today January 11, 2017, Fire Management on the Angeles National Forest
and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument have downgraded the Fire Danger level from “Very High”
to “High”.
Winter rains have brought much-needed precipitation to the southland raising fuel moisture levels
across the forest. With more rain expected in the coming weeks, Angeles’ Fire Chief Robert Garcia
said “moisture levels in vegetation throughout the forest will continue to rise as we receive more
rain, aiding firefighters should any new fires start. We will continue to assess fire danger in the
coming months and modify restriction as needed.”
Fire restrictions on the Angeles National Forest are determined by a graduated system that becomes
more restrictive as fire danger levels increase, and less restrictive as conditions improve. The
“Low” fire danger level is the lowest level of a six-level, graduated fire danger rating system. A
variety of factors determine the level, including the moisture in vegetation, weather conditions
and nationwide firefighting equipment and personnel needs.
Fire Restrictions include:
• Wood or charcoal fires are allowed only in developed campgrounds and developed picnics areas
within designated fire rings provided.
• White gas, jellied or propane-type camp stoves and lanterns used outside of developed recreation
sites are permitted with a valid California Campfire Permit.
• Spark arrestors (required year-round) should be checked to make sure they are in good working
order on all off-road vehicles, chain saws and other equipment with internal combustion engines.
• Fireworks are prohibited on Angeles National Forest and Monument year round.
• Discharging of firearms is prohibited on the forest except for the purpose of hunting during the
designated hunting season as established by the California Department of Fish and Game. Target
shooting is only allowed within designated areas on the forest. Steel core ammunition, armor
piercing ammunition, and tracer ammunition is never allowed.
