Learn Basic Navigation Skills in Allegheny National Forest

Warren, PA, June 7, 2024 —The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service is offering a free, ranger-led program about the basics of orienteering in Allegheny National Forest. This public program will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Hearts Content Recreation Area near Tidioute.

“All are welcome to join as we discuss the basics of navigation using only a map and compass. We will be utilizing the existing orienteering courses at Hearts Content, finding ‘control’ points along the trail.” said Ranger Sarah Needs.

This program will utilize the intermediate orienteering course, considered to be moderately difficult. Approximately two miles of hiking is expected, primarily on-trail, with short off-trail portions. Maps and compasses will be provided.

Discussion of the Leave No Trace Principles will be included to provide a framework of minimum impact practices while exploring the outdoors.

We recommend participants wear weather-appropriate clothing, hiking boots or shoes, and bring insect protection and water. Participants should meet no later than 1:20 p.m. in the Hearts Content parking area.
