Blue Lake Campground

ALERT!

Blue Lake Campground remains closed due to hazardous conditions created by blown down trees. Fishing access will be available, but no vehicle access past the Blue Lake Day Use Area. Personnel are working to have the campground open this year (2024) in a limited capacity in time for the 4th of July holiday.

Blue Lake Campground is a developed campground with reservable and first-come-first-served sites. Available attractions: Lake and stream fishing. Blue lake is approximately one mile from the campground and the tributaries of Cuchara River run through campground.

For trail use, from the campground, take FSR 436 1.5 miles to the non-motorized North Fork Trail #1309. FSR 436 continues to old mine and saddle approximately 500 vertical feet below summit of Trinchera Peak. Access to the Indian Trial #1300 Trailhead at Bear Lake campground one mile further up FSR 422. This trailhead is a multi user trail system and accesses 23 miles of motorized trails available for ATV, motorcycle, bicycle, foot, and horse use. There is a 3/4 mile non-motorized trail between Bear Lake and Blue Lake.

Fees:
$24.00 per site fee is charged for overnight camping. Two vehicles allowed; an extra fee of $10.00 each for additional vehicles. Fees are payable by cash, check or money order, if not reserved on line. Self-servicing fee tube is available. First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the first night. Restrictions:
  • Maximum 10 persons per site: 2 tents and 2 vehicles or 1 recreation vehicle (RV).
  • Maximum length of RV is 40 feet.
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times.
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks.
  • Only licensed vehicles can operate inside campground.
  • Camping is not allowed behind a locked gate.

Passes:

The Interagency Senior Pass (previously known as the Golden Age Pass) and the Interagency Access Pass qualifies for a 50% discount at concessionaire run campsites. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.

Directions:

To get there from La Veta, drive south on SH 12 for 13 miles to FSR 422. Turn right onto FSR 422 and follow it for 4 miles until you reach the Blue Lake Campground.

Activities

Campground Camping

15 campsites, with maximum spur length of 40 feet. Parking spurs, tables, fire rings, grills, trash receptacles are provided at this campground. Drinking water is provided by a well with a hand pump. There is 1 double vault accessible toilet and 1 single vault toilet.

Lake and Pond Fishing

Blue lake is approximately ½ mile from campground and the tributaries of Cuchara river run through campground.
