Whitetail Campground


Area Status: Open

Located in the southeastern corner of the Bessey Ranger District on the Dismal River, this 10-site campground has a hand pump for water, nine horse corrals, picnic tables, fire rings, and modern vault toilets.  It is situated on the OHV trail system.  No electricity is available.

Reservations: None. The sites are first-come, first-served.
Fees: $15.00 per night to be paid within 30 minutes of arrival. Fee envelopes and a collection box are provided at the entrance.

Busiest Season: November rifle deer season
Restrictions: Livestock must be kept and fed in the corrals.  No portable panels or electric fencing are allowed.  Certified weed-free hay is required.  No livestock are allowed in the campground.
Closest Towns: Halsey, about 13 miles; and Thedford, about 29 miles.

General Information

Directions:

From Highway 2, turn south into the forest.  After crossing the river, stay right on State Spur 86B.  Follow 86B to Forest Road 203 south (do not turn right at the first 203, take the left up the road).  Follow 203 south about 8 miles to Forest Road 224 east, then follow the signs to the campground.


General Notes:

Forest Road 277 has been closed for resource protection.

Campground Camping

Ten campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets.  Water is available.  No electric hookups exist.  Nine corrals are available for livestock. The campground is located at one end of the OHV trail system.

Horse Riding

Viewing Wildlife

A variety of species inhabit the area including deer, rabbits, and other varmints.

Species Prairie dogs, burrowing owls, black-footed ferrets, rattlesnakes, antelope, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chickens.
